And the Quilt Continues...

Day 2 of the quilt went well.  I love how it turned out.  While I'm waiting for the other grandmothers to send me linen, lace, or hankie that I can use on the quilt, I'm trying to get all the appliqued designs done.  This one took me from 11:00 to 4:30 to complete.  But it went well. 

I used 5x5 charm squares to help with the placement of the appliqued letters.  Made it so much easier to line the letters up.  I did cheat a little and eyeballed it too. The letters each were under 5".

I still find the hardest thing to do when it comes to making something, without patterns or really even if I have a pattern, is fabric decisions.  As you will probably noticed, there are a couple of fabrics that weren't in the other photo, but really blended well. 

The quilt will be approximately 43" wide and it's length is still to be determined.  I'm also debating on whether to quilt it myself or send it to a professional quilter.  I'll know more when I get closer to completions. 

I would like to think that this journey will inspire you to try something different and new. 

The Beginnings of a Quilt for Emersyn

You know, I'm not a quilter by any means, I've taught quilting, but to me, I'm just not a traditional quilter.  I love Rag quilts because they are quick and easy. But to say I'm a quilter is a gross mistake.  However, I do get spurts when I want to quilt something.  Pinterest has so many great ideas for a quilt that I decided to do Emersyn a quilt.  I was going to get it done before she was born, but with dad in hospital for over 2 months, that didn't happen.  Now I have some breathing time and knew I needed to get started with it.  So, I'm going to take you on my quilting journey.  I hope it won't get to boring, but it's possible.

To start with, I have some fabric that I just LOVE and it's very hard to find now because it is out of print, but I decided to use it as my starting point.  The fabric is called Flower Sugar by Lecien made in Japan.  (I've made a dress a couple of months back with it). Then I started pulling out fabric and auditioning them with this fabric.  I wanted to keep it fresh but with a vintagey look.

Also, I want to incorporate vintage and antique lace, linens and hankies and give it a little bit of tactile with embellishments. So basically I'm throwing everything including the kitchen sink. I will try to tone it down some and weed out what is overload.

So without further adieu, here are some photo's that will give you an idea of where I'm heading. I also found a couple of extra fabrics to pull in that is not in the picture.  (I told you I have a fabric problem.)

This first square is going to be a 9x7, so it is big enough that it can be seen. I will probably put it down at the bottom left. There are a few more appliques that will be added, including her whole name is 4x4 designs. That will be placed toward the middle right. The white lace in the frame is from my Grandmother's stash which is an antique, the pink is modern looking vintage.

The applique design is from Hang to Dry and is called Vintage Luxe Frame.  I can't get enough of Crissie's vintage luxe designs.  She does a beautiful job designing.  I told you that fabric would look familiar.

So I've promised you photo's of fabrics being used.

You can see a couple of Lecien fabrics that are going to be used. The more I look at it the more I think I need to include that minky. hahaha....

YUMMY!!! I love all the embellishments I've collected for this quilt.  I still need to locate my vintage hankies. (in a drawer somewhere).  Aren't these delicious?  This pile ranges from modern, retro, vintage and antique.
