I took a yard of quatrefoil fabric and opened it up and folded it in half horizonal instead of vertical. Next, I folded it again, so it looks almost square. I made a mark where I wanted my neck line to start about 6" from the fold and gradually began cutting, increasing the width to 3" when you reach the end. When you open it up you have a BIG hole, but never fear, it will work out in the end.
I found some double fold blanket binding. Pin the binding around the neckline like a sandwich. (binding, fabric, binding). Be sure to leave an overlapped opening on the neck to use for your boning.
Find you some contrasting or complimentary fabric. Watch out for fabric on the "nap" make sure you have enough for it to go one way. Next cut out 10" of this fabric but the length of your poncho. (measure wider if you need more length.) Iron it in half lengthwise. Again, take it to the serger and with pretty side of fabric on top, lay your pressed, folded, fabric across the hem of your poncho, like you would pillowcase dress hems. Stitch, reinforcing the ends. Iron this nice and neat. Now you are ready to serge the sides.
The last step is your pockets. Now this bought poncho had smaller pockets. I decided to make a larger divided pocket to hold wipes and nursing pads and then thought about making the second pocket as an after thought. It can be used for phone, keys, etc. The larger pocket was approximately 12" and I stitch a seam over to the side to divide. (also so it wouldn't gap open.) It can be used to hold baby wipes (in baggie) and nursing pads. The smaller pocket I folded down at the bottom and then lined it up so it could gap a little. This is for your phones, keys.
Last I had to buy boning and insert the boning into the neck binding. Be sure that you stitch just past each end to keep it in place.
When I have time, I will try and make a tutorial for you.
